ISMP Updates Guidelines to Address Medication Safety Risks
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) has updated guidelines in an effort to improve how medication information is communicated through electronic health records (EHRs). The revised “Guidelines for Safe Electronic Communication of Medication Information,” last updated in 2019, reflects challenges with health information technology and aims to reduce medication errors in inpatient and outpatient settings

The new guidelines include recommendations for expressing drug names clearly, including the use of tall man lettering to help distinguish medications that look alike. In addition, the guidelines recommend improving drug search and selection errors and work to ensure essential information such as dosage route and form remains visible. The recommendations apply across all types of health IT systems used to manage medications, including EHRs, pharmacy platforms, e-prescribing systems and smart infusion pumps.

FDA Commissioner Announces Resolution of IV Saline Solutions Shortage
Today, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H, issued a statement to announce the end of the nationwide shortage of sodium chloride 0.9% injection products, a form of intravenous (IV) saline. These products will be removed from the FDA list of Current Shortages in the Drug Shortage Database on the FDA website. The FDA said it generally recommends hospitals, health systems, and clinics use the FDA-approved drug when available. For other IV fluids still in shortage, the FDA said it “is working closely with manufacturers and will continue to monitor the supply to help ensure patients have access to the medicines they need.”

CDC COCA Call: Clinician Update on U.S. Measles Cases and Outbreaks
This year, record-breaking numbers of U.S. measles cases and outbreaks have been reported, despite measles being declared eliminated in 2000. While the risk of widespread measles remains low for the general population due to high population-level immunity, measles importations continue to occur.

During a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Clinician Outreach and Communication Activity (COCA) Call, presenters will discuss the current epidemiology of measles in the United States and address the most common questions from clinicians about preventing, identifying, and testing for measles. Presenters will also summarize measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination recommendations and considerations. Click here to join the call on Thursday, Aug. 14 from 1-2 p.m. CT. Registration is not required.

If you are unable to attend the live session of this COCA Call, the closed-captioned video and transcript will be available on the COCA Call webpage approximately one week after the live session. The slide deck will be available on the day of the call on the COCA Call webpage under “Webinar.” Free Continuing Education credit will be offered for this COCA Call.

Illinois COVID-19 Data

The Illinois Dept. of Public Health (IDPH) has a weekly Infectious Respiratory Disease Surveillance Dashboard that is updated weekly on Friday. This report provides the public with the latest data on hospital visits, seasonal trends, lab test positivity and demographic data.

IDPH will continue to report the weekly number of people with COVID-19 admitted to hospitals from emergency departments, deaths and vaccinations, with COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus information also reported through the dashboard of the Illinois Wastewater Surveillance System.

A new study published in Communications Medicine found that widely used AI chatbots are highly vulnerable to repeating and elaborating on false medical information. Study authors said this underscores the critical importance of stronger safeguards before these tools can be trusted in healthcare, noting that research demonstrated a simple, built-in warning prompt can significantly reduce the associated risk.

The State Journal-Register

A new poll in Illinois looked at a small sampling of “likely 2026 General Election voters” and asked them about issues facing the state. The poll found that Gov. JB Pritzker has lost favorability, among other findings. Asked about the biggest issue facing the state currently, 60% of respondents said high taxes, followed by 26% who said state governance and then 25% who said the economy.

Community members, elected officials say Weiss closing will have ‘severe’ consequences

Chicago Sun-Times

Uptown and Edgewater community members and local elected officials are rallying to keep Weiss Memorial Hospital open. The North Side safety-net hospital will likely close Friday as it’s set to lose major federal health insurance payments starting this weekend. State investigations found a monthslong pattern of Weiss being in and out of compliance with federal regulators due to issues with its emergency room, air-conditioning system and nursing staff.

Endeavor Health spreads Cancer Institute investment locally while Chicago hospitals centralize

Crain’s Chicago Business

While hospitals try to prepare for an expected swell in demand for cancer care over the coming years, Endeavor Health is zigging where other Chicago health systems are zagging. Endeavor is taking a decentralized approach to its “institute model” for cancer: Rather than designating one hospital as the must-visit destination for patients, care will be dispersed throughout all the system’s nine hospitals.
