Take the National Pediatric Readiness Assessment for EDs by May 31
Children have unique characteristics that require specific care, especially in emergencies, and high readiness is associated with as much as 76% reduced mortality risk in pediatric ill or injured patients. However, low pediatric patient volume can make it challenging to prioritize pediatric care, and as a result, not all children have access to specialized pediatric care. In fact, 80% of children receive emergency care in general emergency departments (EDs).
In response, the National Pediatric Readiness Project (NPRP) is seeking feedback from EDs across the country as part of the 2026 NPRP Assessment. Participation in this assessment will assist EDs in identifying gaps in pediatric readiness, and help them prepare with the systems, policies, equipment, and training needed to deliver safe, timely, high-quality pediatric care.
Click here to complete your assessment. Currently Illinois has a 60% response rate, and with the nationwide assessment only taking place every five years; you don’t want to miss this opportunity to provide your input.

CDC Health News Alert: Hantavirus Outbreak – Testing for Infection
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a May 18 Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Update to inform clinicians and health departments about testing available for patients with suspected hantavirus infection to include Andes virus. On May 2, an outbreak of Andes virus on a cruise ship was reported to the World Health Organization. This outbreak has raised the possibility of cases being imported to the United States, though as of May 18, no confirmed cases of Andes virus associated with the cruise ship outbreak have been reported in the U.S. Therefore, CDC said the overall risk to the American public is still considered extremely low at this time. However, in response, CDC’s Health Update informs clinicians about testing and consultation available for Andes virus and other hantavirus.
CDC Implements Travel Restrictions in Response to Ebola Outbreaks
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security, and other appropriate federal agencies, yesterday said they are taking proactive measures, including implementing enhanced travel screening, entry restrictions, and public health measures to prevent Ebola disease from entering the United States amid ongoing outbreaks in East and Central Africa. For the next 30 days, the U.S. will restrict entry into the country for people without U.S. passports who were in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan or Uganda in the last three weeks. NBC News reported that the State Department said U.S. embassies in those three countries have paused all visa services temporarily.
