Durbin, Kelly Introduce Care for Moms Act to Address Maternal Mortality
Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL) have once again introduced the Community Access, Resources, and Empowerment (CARE) for Moms Act in response to continued increases in U.S. maternal mortality and morbidity rates, which disproportionately impacts Black women. The CARE for Moms Act supports the maternal health workforce, promotes access to prenatal and postpartum care, and provides the resources that moms and babies need to thrive. Funding Opportunity: Veteran Suicide Prevention Programs
The CDC Foundation, in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Safe States Alliance, is funding projects to help veteran-serving organizations strengthen their suicide prevention programs.
The Veteran Suicide Prevention Evaluation (VSPE) Program will provide support to up to four veteran-serving organizations or nonprofits in the form of up to $75,000 in funding; individualized support to evaluate an existing veteran suicide prevention program; and group training and technical assistance. The goal is to help organizations better understand what is working, identify areas for improvement, and use information to strengthen their programs and prevention efforts. Programs should align with the CDC’s Suicide Prevention Resource for Action.
Organizations must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and meet the eligibility requirements to be invited to apply for the full funding opportunity. Only organizations that have submitted an EOI and meet the eligibility criteria will be invited to apply for the full funding opportunity. The EOI deadline is Thursday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. CT. IDPH Health Alert: Bicillin L-A® Lots With Extended Use Dates
The Illinois Dept. of Public Health (IDPH) issued a health alert to clinicians that the Food and Drug Administration has extended the use date for multiple lots of Bicillin L-A® (penicillin G injectable suspension) to mitigate the ongoing shortage of these critical products. IDPH said clinicians should review the listed lots and verify lot numbers prior to use. IDPH strongly recommended clinicians prioritize the extended-use lots during the shortage; however, they should be transitioned out of use once supply stabilizes. The Department also reminded clinicians to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prioritization guidance and consider temporary alternatives, such as Lentocilin, when appropriate. Illinois Respiratory Disease Surveillance Data
The Infectious Respiratory Disease Surveillance Dashboard from the Illinois Dept. of Public Health (IDPH) provides the latest data on hospital visits, seasonal trends, lab test positivity and demographic data. IDPH also tracks COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus information through the Illinois Wastewater Surveillance System dashboard.

Inventia Healthcare Limited is voluntarily recalling 13,567 bottles of chlorthalidone tablets citing potential failure to dissolve properly, which may lower the dosage that gets absorbed by the body. The bottles of 25 mg tablets being recalled nationwide have the batch number RISA24002 and an expiration date of March 2027. The Food and Drug Administration assigned it a Class II risk level, which may cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”
